Protect Yourself From Poisonous Plants!

There are plenty of potential risks that present themselves when working outdoors. Of course, one of the most dreaded is potential contact with poisonous plants. If you live in the Brandenburg, Kentucky area, or anywhere in North America for that matter, it is very likely that you will eventually come in contact with poison ivy, poison oak or poison sumac since they grow in wooded/marshy areas throughout North America. If you’ve ever experienced a poison plant rash, then you already know how dreadful, itchy, and even painful it can be. Between the redness, swelling, and blisters, it’s certainly no fun. For those who are more sensitive a severe case can become quite serious, which is why poisonous plant protection is so important.

What is this growing on my mulch?

Mulch serves a lot of incredibly valuable benefits for your flower beds, not only making them look more attractive, but also protecting your plants’ roots from wind, heat and suppressing weeds. When you invest in top-quality mulch, you are looking for optimal performance and if installed properly, that’s exactly what you’ll get. Unfortunately, sometimes even with proper installation and a high-quality mulch, you can still end up with an unattractive growth on top of your mulch. The growth that you may have spotted in your mulch is fungus. There are several types of fungal growths that occur in mulch, although unpleasant, fungal growth in mulch is normal.

Know The Signs Of Heat Related Illness

Today is officially the first day of summer and although we’ve had lower than normal temperatures here in the Brandenburg, Kentucky area, things are bound to heat up eventually. Whether you’re a homeowner looking to tackle some outdoor landscaping, gardening, or you’re in the landscape business, working in extreme heat can become a dangerous situation if the proper precautions aren’t taken. Understanding heat related illness and recognizing the signs and symptoms of it can be lifesaving information.

When it comes to working outdoors in the heat the most important thing to make sure of is that you and your crew have access to plenty of water and a cool area to take breaks. If you or your crew must be outside during the hottest part of the day, make sure to take breaks and rehydrate in the shade, indoors, or in an air-conditioned vehicle. Sun protection is also important and anyone spending an extended amount of time in the sun and heat should consider wearing sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and even a lightweight long sleeve shirt for full sun protection.

Taking preventative measures to protect yourself (or your crews) also means becoming familiar with the signs of heat-related illnesses. These can come on fast and potentially become life-threatening so it’s important that you know what to look for.
