Here in the state of Kentucky excitement builds as the 149th running of the Kentucky Derby will take place on May 6, 2023. For 6 weeks, the city of Louisville celebrates all things Derby, with parades, steamboat races, the balloon glow and one of the world’s largest firework displays. There is definitely a festival type vibe in Louisville leading up to and during Derby week.
The Kentucky Derby, America’s Greatest Race, is more than just one day of horse racing. In fact, the Kentucky Derby is a multi-day event with three full days of horse racing. Thurby, which is an all-day event on Thursday before the actual Derby is full of horse racing, famous Kentucky bourbon, and Bluegrass music. Oaks Day, well known for the pink attire worn by both men and women in honor of breast cancer awareness, is the third most attended day of horse racing in the United States. Derby Day itself is on Saturday. Over 150,000 spectators fill the seats at Churchill Downs to watch the highly anticipated 1.25 mile “Run for the Roses”. If you plant to attend the Kentucky Derby, for the sake of tradition, you have to try a Mint Julep, the official drink of the Kentucky Derby.
