Tips For Designing Your Landscape

When it comes to landscaping your home or business there are so many decisions to make and ideas to consider, it can become quite overwhelming to even know where to begin.  Getting the most out of the space that you have to work with is key when it comes to designing your landscape.  The first thing you need to do is consider the elements that you want to incorporate in your landscape such as trees, flower beds, waterfalls, block and shrubbery.

You definitely want to plant items that will bloom at different times of the year along with incorporating evergreens into your landscape so that even in the winter months you still have some green.

If there are certain areas of your landscape that you often use such as a pool, patio, or a play area, then you should consider installing a paved pathway instead of beating a path through the grass walking frequently from one area to another.

If you choose to incorporate a water feature to your design like a waterfall or a fountain you should certainly consider using stones or rocks that look natural in the environment.

Outdoor lighting can be used to highlight walkways and to illuminate different areas of your landscape. There is a large variety of lighting styles to choose from and outdoor lighting not only adds to the overall aesthetics of your property but also makes it safer to be outdoors after dark and it could help deter unwanted guests.

You want your landscape to be composed of a wide variety of plants. You want different colored flowers that bloom at different times. Do not just consider the flowers the plant produces but also plants with a variety of leaf colors, and textures to create an aesthetically pleasing area all year round.

Retaining walls are designed to help keep soil in one place and allow proper drainage. Your retaining wall does not have to be a drab concrete structure that you try to hide behind shrubs.  There are many block designs to choose from (natural stone, multi-colored bricks, or pavers) that are both functional and add curb appeal to your landscape design.

Consider adding some seating areas to your landscape that will provide you with a place to rest while you enjoy your outdoor living area.

You can add a unique look to your landscape and make it more welcoming by creating curves instead of straight lines. You can make curved edges on your paths, curves on your retaining walls, or curves around your flower beds.

Plant tall plants or shrubs around your property and create a visual property line or border. These plants will help to define the landscaped area while adding a certain amount of privacy.
