Backyard Summer Break Activities for Restless Kids

It’s summertime here in Brandenburg, Kentucky and most kids are home from school.  If you are like most parents, you need creative ways to keep them entertained and out of the house.  Whether you have toddlers, preschoolers, or you want to have fun as a family, below are a few fun backyard activities for all ages.

Energetic toddlers need outdoor activities to burn off some of that energy.  Most of the time you can find things you already have around the house to entertain them without breaking the bank to keep them busy.

  • Blow bubbles, you can even make your own with water and dish soap.

  • Kick or throw a ball around.

  • Kids love to “Fix” things with play tools.

  • Fill a large bin or plastic kiddie pool with water, sand, or gravel along with items such as toys, shovels, plastic bowls, and safe kitchen utensils.

  • Let your toddler get messy whether it’s playing in the dirt or mud.

  • Look for bugs or go on a nature walk.

  • Collect rocks and let them paint them to add to your flower bed or garden.

School age children enjoy opportunities to build or create things.

  • Give your kids some sidewalk chalk. Let them color on the sidewalk, driveway, fence, or rocks. The rain will eventually wash their artwork away and it is a great pastime for them.

  • If your child loves art, tape a big sheet of paper to a fence, fill a muffin tin with finger paints, and let them get artistic. Taking this project outside makes clean-up a breeze.

  • Ride bikes.

  • Spread out a blanket and encourage your child to read a book or play with toys under a shady tree.

  • Make a homemade bird feeder and hang it from a tree branch.  Make sure they keep an eye out for hungry birds that come to feed.

  • Set up a playhouse or plastic slides.

  • Put them in water, kids love water whether it is a sprinkler, swimming pool, creek or pond.

Sometimes, keeping your kids occupied is for the sole purpose of helping busy parents get some work done.  Other times it’s about playing and bonding as a family. There are so many outdoor activities for adults and children to enjoy together that it is impossible to list them all here, but below are a few ideas for some outdoor summer fun.

  • Have a picnic lunch followed by a nature walk.

  • Go fishing, hiking or camping (even if it’s a tent in the backyard).

  • Play freeze tag, whiffle ball or ride bikes.

  • Have an outdoor movie night.

  • Go swimming.

  • Build a raised garden bed as a family.

  • Check Facebook or other social media platforms for activities in your area. You will be surprised how much there is to explore close to home.
